Sound and Society

Sound is omnipresent in our lives. Some sounds are useful, some are enjoyable. Some sounds are intrusive, some are hazardous

20 December 2020. “A World of Sound” to encourage kids into science

As part of the contributions to the IYS 2020-21, the UK Acoustics Network is editing a collection of articles on A World of Sound for Frontiers for Young Minds Collection aimed at an audience of ages 8-15. All items will be freely available and the part of the collection is described at kids.frontiersin.org/collection/17985/a-world-of-sound.

There are two examples of published articles relating to sound:
kids.frontiersin.org/article/10.3389/frym.2020.00081, and
https://kids.frontiersin.org/article/10.3389/frym.2020.00082.

So this is a great opportunity to communicate interesting aspects of acoustics and to encourage kids into science. To become involved in the process:

  1. Submit a short abstract to describe your proposal at kids.frontiersin.org/collection/17985/a-world-of-sound.
Deadline for this is 8th Jan 2021.
  2. Fifteen to twenty will be selected based on likely appeal to a young audience and invited to submit a short article by 1st May 2021

A balanced representation of topics are sought across all of acoustics, including:

  • Aeroacoustics
  • Ultrasonics,
  • Non-destructive evaluation,
  • Bioacoustics,
  • Biomedical acoustics,
  • Hearing/cognition/communication,
  • Noise/soundscapes/room acoustics,
  • Metamaterials,
  • Mathematical/computational acoustics,
  • Underwater acoustics,
  • Vibroacoustics,
  • Anything else on sound?

There is also a need for Mentors to assist the young reviewers who will be involved with the publication process – again contact charlotte.swain@acoustics.ac.uk if you wish to assist.
